EDIT 9990 (Foundations) Research Proposal

In the Foundations course, I developed the following research proposal to analyze pharmacists’ decision making in pharmacy practice settings, and contextualize the findings within the framework of an existing pharmacy problem solving model called the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process.  The purpose of this exploratory study is to create a stronger foundation for considering novel approaches to the development of learning environments for pharmacy students, rooted in the real experiences of experts in the field of pharmacy practice.

Pharmacists’ Real World Decision Making Research – IRB Protocol and Data Collection

This is the IRB protocol for the study outlined above.  Included are the consent letter, recruitment email, and the protocols for the initial and follow-up interviews.  I’m currently collecting data for this study and working on a data analysis plan.  I’ve also included an example of a decision timeline generated from one of the interviews.

EDIT 9990 (Assessment of Real World Problem Solving) Artifact, Project Overview, and AECT Symposium Proposal

In Dr. Choi’s 9990 seminar (Assessment of Real World Problem Solving), I worked with a team (Rita Rong, Supriya Mishra) to examine existing approaches to assessing health professions students’ clinical reasoning skills.  In the course of our study, we analyzed a commonly cited method known as the Script Concordance Test, and developed a modified prototype that we believe links more closely with theoretical perspectives from the domain of cognitive psychology, and may provide deeper insight into students’ clinical reasoning capabilities.  Dr. Choi incorporated our project into a 2017 AECT symposium proposal linked below.

AECT 2017 Conference Round Table Session Proposal

I submitted a proposal to the 2017 AECT conference to report on key findings from the analysis I will conduct this summer of pharmacists’ naturalistic decision making.  My goal is to discuss the projects implications for learning design for pharmacy students, and more broadly, the use of cognitive task analysis methods for identifying the knowledge and thought processes that underlie expert performance.

Case-Based E-Learning Research Project, College of Pharmacy/College of Education

I am currently a member of a joint college of pharmacy/college of education research team investigating the effect of newly designed case-based activities on student learning in a disease state management course.  This project has been underway for several years, but since beginning the LDT program in the fall of 2016, I have made additional contributions to the project, including co-writing/revising the introduction and literature review, co-writing the design section of the manuscript, and conducting qualitative data collection and analysis for the project.  A current draft of the methods section of the manuscript is linked below.

PHRM 4040 Essentials of Pharmacy Practice, Case-Based E-Learning Module

At the College of Pharmacy, I collaborate with another instructional designer and faculty instructors on the design and development of learning experiences for pharmacy students.  As part of a major curriculum overhaul that began in the fall of 2015, we have been designing new case-based learning resources to promote the development of students’ clinical problem solving skills.  In the fall of 2016, we worked on eight case-based learning experiences in a new course called Essentials of Pharmacy Practice.  The course requires complex collaboration between the IDT Office, separate subject matter experts for each case, and a separate team of faculty that facilitate the case activities.  Linked below are a design document that I developed to serve as a guide for content experts, an example of an initial storyboard, and a prototype of one case activity.  I’m fortunate to work with a talented team member (Katie Smith) who is responsible for the graphic design and final authoring of the prototype below.
